Summer is over and school is back in session. Now it is time to hit the books (I mean READ them)! As the Reading Leader for Miami Gardens Elementary, I eagerly await the opportunity to enhance the reading and writing skills of our children. I plan to encourage students to participate in a variety of activities designed to promote these skills.
Our "Accelerated Reader" Program is up and running and I challenge students to read, read, read! Once they read their "Accelerated Reader" books, they can take a quiz on the computer. The more books they read, the more points they can accumulate. This year we will be awarding prizes to students as they attain specific point levels. In addition, students performing at the "proficient" level on their reading benchmark assessments, will receive certificates over the closed circuit television system.
Miami Gardens Elementary is committed to teaching students the "writing process". Each month writing samples from every class will be submitted to me. From these samples, a "Writer of the Month" will be selected from Grades K and 1, Grades 2 and 3, and Grades 4 and 5. These winners will receive prizes and share their work on the morning announcements. These writing samples will also be displayed outside the main office. Please feel free to stop by and read them. Additionally, interested students will receive assistance in developing poems, essays and stories for a variety of district-approved writing contests.
All in all, I look forward to a very productive, rewarding school year.
